Small Comforts Bakeshop makes food the right way – we start with high-quality ingredients, shape our pastries by hand and size them just right. Not too small, not too large. We offer a range of products, from breakfast pastries to seasonal pies to gluten-free items. We’re constantly developing new treats and flavors, but if it doesn’t taste amazing, we don’t sell it.
We serve retail, wholesale and catering customers, and deliver throughout the DC metro area. If you’re in Maryland, stop by and say hello at our year-round stand at the Olney Farmers & Artists Market.

Where To Find Us
While we look for a permanent shop location, our pastries are available year-round at the Olney Farmers and Artists Market.
January - April: indoors at the Sandy Spring Museum.
May - November: outdoors on the grounds of the Montgomery County Hospital at Rt. 108 and Prince Philip Drive.
Can't make it to the market? Email us with a special order request and we'll deliver to your door.

If a fancy tiered cake isn’t your style, ask us for ideas for a cake-free wedding! We love working with brides to create the perfect rustic-elegant dessert table, featuring seasonal pies, old-fashioned cookies and gourmet brownies. Our bite-sized treats are also delicious wedding favors.
Birthdays & Anniversaries
We bake-to-order cupcakes, layer cakes and sheet cakes in classic flavors and frosting combinations. Some cakes can be made gluten-free, without compromising their deliciousness.
Corporate Events & Gifts
We cater and deliver baked goods to offices throughout the DC metro area. We also create custom baskets that are perfect thank you gifts for clients and employees. Delivery fees may apply, please inquire.
Wholesale
We work with restaurants, coffee shops, boutique hotels, and gourmet food markets across the DC area to provide handcrafted, small-batch pastries for their establishments. Contact us for details and prices.

Our Story
Small Comforts Bakeshop handcrafts pastries from scratch, using high quality ingredients that are full of flavor.
Founded in 2010 by friends who shared a passion for great food, a healthy lifestyle and serving their community, SCBS recreates nostalgic childhood treats that are sized “just right” – many of which cater to special dietary needs. SCBS is run by owner and baker-in-chief Karen Sippel, a lifelong resident of the DC area and devout pie-lover.
Armed with pastry training from L’Academie de Cuisine, a top ten culinary school, and years of experience in start-up environments, Karen left a career in PR and marketing to develop Small Comforts into a community-focused retail and wholesale bakery.
SCBS supports local agriculture by sourcing ingredients from nearby farmer friends. That’s why all of our pies, which were named by The Washington Post as an “Editor’s Pick for Best Pies,” follow the flavors of the season.
Our pastries, including awesome gluten-free options, can be found year-round at the Olney Farmers & Artists Market in Olney, MD and are available by special order. They are also available at establishments throughout the DC metro area.
We are committed to giving back to our community from the very beginning, which is why we donate 1% of profits to local charities that use food to educate and fight hunger.
